Common questions
How is a community outreach newsletter different from a parent newsletter?
It speaks to people who are not the primary stakeholders. The tone is more invitational and less operational. You are not reminding people about homework deadlines. You are making the case for why the school is worth supporting and how community involvement benefits everyone, including people without children enrolled.
What should a community outreach newsletter include?
A story from inside the school that illustrates community impact, an invitation to a school event open to the public, an update on a community partnership, and a specific way for community members to get involved. Keep it short. Community members have even less patience for long school communications than parents do.
How do I reach community stakeholders who are not enrolled school families?
Go to where they already are. Partner with local newspapers, community Facebook groups, civic organizations, and neighborhood associations. Physical newsletters at community gathering places such as libraries, community centers, and places of worship reach audiences that school email lists never will.
