ELL & ESL

Newsletter guides for ELL and ESL teachers communicating with multilingual and immigrant families

ELL and ESL teachers work with the families who are hardest to reach through standard school communication channels. Language is the first barrier, but it is not the only one. Trust, cultural context, and past experiences with institutions also shape how multilingual families receive school communication. The articles here address the specific challenges ELL and ESL teachers face: writing newsletters for families who are themselves learning English, communicating about language development in a way that does not feel clinical or deficit-focused, and building relationships with families who may have had negative experiences with school systems in their home countries. There are also bilingual templates in Spanish, Arabic, and other commonly served languages.

Common questions

How do I communicate with families who do not speak English?

Use a translation tool, then have a native-speaking colleague review it before sending. For high-stakes communications like IEP notices and enrollment deadlines, use a professional translator. For weekly classroom updates, a reviewed machine translation is acceptable. Never send auto-translated text without review for school-to-family communication.

What should an ELL teacher newsletter include?

The student's current proficiency level in plain terms rather than scores and acronyms, specific language goals for this unit, two to three ways families can support English development at home, and a reassurance about timeline. ELL families are often anxious about how quickly their child will be mainstreamed. Address that directly.

How do I communicate with families who do not have email?

Build a paper and phone communication plan. Send printed newsletters home with students. For important updates, make a direct phone call with an interpreter if needed. Do not assume email is the universal channel for multilingual families.
