Common questions
How do I communicate about a DEI initiative without creating division?
Lead with the specific problem you are solving, not the ideology behind your approach. "We noticed that certain student groups are underrepresented in our honors program and we are investigating why" is less divisive than a newsletter about equity and social justice. Specificity reduces the temperature.
How do I celebrate cultural events without tokenizing?
Involve the communities being celebrated in planning the communication, not just the celebration. A newsletter about a cultural event written without input from the families who celebrate it reads differently than one shaped by those families. Ask before you represent.
What should I do when a DEI newsletter generates backlash?
Respond directly, in writing, to the specific criticism. Acknowledge what was heard. Clarify intent if warranted. Do not delete or walk back communication that was accurate unless it was factually incorrect. Families who see you respond to disagreement respectfully trust you more than families who never see you disagreed with.
