Newsletter guides for magnet school coordinators and IB programme coordinators communicating with families
Magnet and IB programs have families who applied, competed, and in some cases traveled across district lines to be there. The communication expectation is different from a neighborhood school. Families in these programs have already demonstrated a high level of engagement, and they expect communication that matches their investment. The articles here cover how to communicate the program philosophy without losing families unfamiliar with educational frameworks, how to manage communication about the selective admission process, and how to maintain community cohesion in a program that draws from multiple feeder schools with different cultures.

Common questions
What should a magnet program newsletter include?
The current thematic unit or IB unit of inquiry, upcoming program-specific events, any testing or assessment windows that differ from the base school, and enrichment opportunities beyond the school day. Magnet and IB families respond to communication that reflects the program's depth. Generic newsletters feel like a mismatch with the education they chose.
How do I communicate the IB philosophy to families who are new to the program?
Start with what students do, not what the IB organization says about it. "In the Primary Years Programme, students choose an inquiry question and spend six weeks investigating it from multiple disciplines" is more accessible than citing the Learner Profile. Ground the philosophy in observable practice.
How do I communicate about the selective admission process for a magnet program?
Separately from the program newsletter. Admission communication should come from enrollment, not from the program coordinator. Keep admission process details out of the regular program newsletter. Families who did not get in do not want to read about the selection process in every issue.
