School Counselors
Newsletter guides for K-12 counselors communicating mental health, college prep, and student support
A school counselor newsletter occupies an unusual position: it carries more emotional weight than an academic update, but it cannot be so heavy that families stop reading it. The articles here cover the balance. You will find guides for communicating mental health resources without stigma, addressing social-emotional topics in developmentally appropriate language for elementary, middle, and high school families, and building a counselor presence in school communication that is trusted rather than feared. There are also resources for communicating during difficult moments: a student crisis, a community tragedy, or a spike in anxiety and behavioral referrals after a traumatic event.

Common questions
What should a school counselor newsletter include?
One theme per issue: stress management, peer conflict, screen time, or any topic relevant to that month. Include a short explanation of what the counselor is doing in classrooms, one or two resources families can use at home, and a clear invitation to reach out. Keep it under 250 words.
How do I communicate about student mental health without creating stigma?
Use normalizing language. "Every student experiences stress. Here is how we teach students to handle it" is different from "If your child is struggling, here is what to do." One treats mental health as universal. The other treats it as a problem. The first approach gets more families to read and respond.
When should a school counselor send a newsletter?
Monthly is standard, with additional sends tied to the school calendar: back-to-school anxiety in September, holiday stress in December, testing pressure in March and April, and transition anxiety in May. Time your topic to when families are already experiencing it.
