Juneteenth Newsletter
Dear Families, This week our class learned about Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Texas learned they were free. Here's what we talked about and how you can keep the conversation going at home.
What we learned about Juneteenth
Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. We talked about why the day is also called Freedom Day and why it became a federal holiday in 2021.
Students made their own Juneteenth flag art this week, using red for the freedom fighters, blue for the promise of a future, and a star for a new horizon of freedom.

Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Dear Families, May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and our class has spent the week learning about the history and cultures of AAPI communities. Here's a look at what we covered.
Our AAPI Heritage Month projects
Each student researched a country or community across Asia and the Pacific Islands and created a small presentation for the class. We covered everything from Diwali and Lunar New Year to the history of Pacific Islander navigation and the contributions of Asian American leaders.
Students shared paper lanterns, fans, and flags representing the countries they researched, and we mapped every one of them on our classroom world map.

Dear Families, March is Women's History Month, and our class has been researching women who changed history in science, sports, art, and their own communities. Here's what we've been working on.
Researching women who changed history
Every student picked a woman to research, someone from history or someone they admire in real life, and wrote a short biography for our classroom bulletin board. We're covering scientists, athletes, artists, and local community leaders.

Dear Families, Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15, and our class is spending it learning about the history, countries, and cultures represented in our own school community.

Indigenous Peoples' Day
Dear Families, This week our class marked Indigenous Peoples' Day by learning honest history about the Indigenous nations who lived here long before European settlers arrived, and who are still here today.
