Newsletter guides for parent-teacher associations, parent organizations, and school parent councils
A PTA or PTO newsletter has a different job than a teacher newsletter. Teachers communicate what happened. Parent organizations communicate what is coming and what families can do. The articles here cover the full scope of parent organization communication: membership drives, fundraiser announcements, volunteer recruitment, budget transparency, and meeting summaries. There are also guides for PTA boards managing the communication between their organization and the school administration, where the relationship is collaborative but the interests are occasionally different. And there are templates for the hard communication moments: a fundraiser that fell short, a contentious meeting, or a leadership transition.

Common questions
How often should a PTA or PTO send a newsletter?
Monthly during the school year, with additional sends for time-sensitive campaigns like membership drives and fundraisers. Avoid weekly sends unless you have genuinely new information every week. Families who receive too many messages start ignoring all of them.
What should a PTA newsletter include?
Upcoming events with dates and volunteer sign-up links, a brief financial update, a recognition section for recent volunteers, and a clear ask: what do we need from families this month? One newsletter, one primary call to action.
How do I increase PTA membership through the newsletter?
Do not lead with the membership fee. Lead with what members got last year: the specific programs funded, the events supported, the materials purchased. Make the membership ask after the evidence. Families join organizations whose impact they can see.
