How to Write Your First Unit Newsletter as a Math Teacher

The first unit newsletter is the hardest one to write because you have not found your rhythm yet. You are still learning your students, still calibrating how much detail parents actually want. But it is also the most important one you will write all year, because it sets the template for everything that follows.

Get this one right and the next nine are easy. Use the same structure, swap out the content, and send. Here is how to write that first one.

What parents actually want to know about the first math unit

Parents want to know three things: what their child is learning, why it matters, and what they should do when homework hits the table. Every unit newsletter should answer all three in plain language.

For a third-grade class starting a multiplication unit, that might look like: "We are starting our multiplication unit this week. By the end, students will know their multiplication facts through 10x10 and understand several strategies for solving larger problems. We will use these skills all year, especially when we get to area and fractions in February." That is enough. No standards codes, no curriculum jargon.

What to include every month

Unit newsletters have five sections. Keep them short:

  • Unit name and plain-language description. One sentence. Parents should be able to read this aloud to their child and have the child say "yes, that's what we're doing."
  • Key vocabulary. List three to five terms students will use in class and on homework. Write a plain-language definition for each. "Factors are the numbers you multiply together. The product is the answer." That is the level of explanation parents need.
  • The method you are teaching. This is the section parents need most and the one most teachers skip. If you are teaching students to use equal groups before moving to the standard algorithm, say so. If you use arrays, describe what an array is. Then add the one sentence that prevents homework battles: "Please use this method when helping your child, even if a different approach feels easier or faster."
  • Assessment dates. When is the quiz? When is the unit test? Give parents at least one week's notice.
  • One home activity. Not homework. One conversation starter or five-minute activity. "Ask your child to show you the equal groups method using any objects around the house." Realistic. Low-pressure.

Subject-specific content ideas for unit newsletters

  • Include a worked example of the primary strategy, especially for visual methods like area models or number lines
  • Name any manipulatives students are using in class (base ten blocks, fraction tiles, counters) so parents recognize them if they appear in homework
  • Explain whether the unit is building on prior knowledge or starting something new, so parents can calibrate how much review support to offer
  • Mention common misconceptions students typically hit in this unit and how you address them: "Many students initially think you always subtract the smaller number from the larger, even in subtraction problems with regrouping. We work through this directly."
  • If there is a project or performance task, introduce it early so parents are not surprised by a big assignment at the end of the unit
  • Note whether the unit is fast-paced or slower so families know what to expect in terms of homework volume

How to explain math concepts to non-expert parents

The test for a good math explanation in a newsletter: can you explain this concept to a parent who has not thought about this topic since fifth grade? If your explanation requires them to already understand the concept, start over.

Concrete beats abstract every time. "We are learning to divide by breaking the dividend into smaller, friendlier numbers" is clearer than "we are using the partial quotients algorithm." If you teach at the middle school level, this becomes even more important: parents of seventh-graders may not have thought about proportional reasoning in twenty years.

If your format allows images, include one worked example. A photo of a student's work from a previous class (with names removed) or a quick diagram you drew yourself does more than any amount of written explanation. Show the method, do not just describe it.

When to reach out beyond the newsletter

The unit newsletter covers the whole class. Reach out individually when you see a specific student struggling with a prerequisite skill before the unit has even started. If a student is still shaky on addition regrouping and you are about to start multi-digit multiplication, that family needs a heads-up before the unit arrives, not after the first quiz.

Also reach out when a student's homework pattern changes significantly at the start of a new unit. A student who usually completes homework and suddenly submits blank papers is telling you something. A quick note home at the start of the unit beats a hard conversation at progress report time.
