Acton Academy at Grant Park - Parent Monthly

SEPTEMBER 2026

Each day, learners have the opportunity to “call out” a fellow learner for something heroic they noticed in them that day. Here are a few of our favorite call-outs from this month! "Noah told Jaden, 'Whoa, that's so cool, ' about his drawing. I call that kindness." "Quinlan let Harvest be the villain when he really wanted to. I call that self-control." "Emani gave her chair up for Jaxon when he didn't have a seat. I call that kindness."
Update on how the quest is going thus far from Ms. Roekmini:

"The "Build the Tribe" quest is where a new group of Acton learners becomes a community that can work together, and it builds skills that later Quests and Studio life depend on. Learners practice self-governance by co-creating shared norms and a learner-led culture, and they build the collaboration and communication skills to hold each other accountable. They also gain a sense of belonging and psychological safety, which supports the risk-taking that Acton's Hero's Journey requires. The lip dub is the quest's capstone, a hands-on project that turns those ideas into practice. Learners spend weeks planning, choreographing, and filming a single-take music video, and in the process the tribe has to work through the forming, norming, and storming stages of group development. Because no adult directs it, learners must divide roles, negotiate creative differences, give and receive feedback, rehearse, and iterate toward a shared goal, and the final video is both a celebration and a tangible artifact of the tribe's identity. Its authentic public product also gives learners the sense of ownership and pride that comes from making something real together, which sets the tone for the rest of the year.

The learners have finished their lip dubs and are working on finishing up their hero boards and self-portraits in time for the exhibition."
  • Talk about teamwork. Share a vulnerable story about your own teamwork struggles to encourage a growth mindset and open communication about your learner's time in the studio.

  • Ask your learner about a time they worked through a problem or solved a disagreement in the studio.

  •  Talk about the studio contract and tribe expectations. Discuss your own family's contract and the ways you value trust and teamwork together.
