News from Our Executive Director

Hello from Atlanta! I have been learning so much in my time out here. For those that don't yet know me, I am the founder of Wild Hearts and now serve as the executive director, consulting almost daily with Cara, who is the current director. I started Wild Hearts by myself and then asked Cara to join me as my co-director that first year (in 2021). We have been running it together ever since. Last year I made the choice to work at an Acton Academy in Atlanta to finish the process of clearing my teaching credential. Before making this leap, I consulted with the leadership team at Wild Hearts and we decided that it would be best for me to keep my credential and to do what it takes to make that happen, which means working at a school. This school is a great place for me to learn more about running an excellent program for self-directed learners and I often share what I am learning with Cara and other guides. I will be done with my program by the end of May, and I am looking forward to seeing you all at our annual summer program in June!

Meet Our New Assistant Director!

Hello Wild Hearts families! My name is Thea and I am so happy to be part of Wild Hearts team! A little about me... I was born and raised in Visalia with three younger siblings. I attended public school K-4th grade, homeschool 5th-8th grade, charter/independent study 9th-11th and graduated as a Junior. I went to COS and then Long Beach State to complete a bachelors in psychology. I started my career working as a behavior technician for Center for Autism and Related Disorders, then moved to administration of group homes for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and finally, spent the last six years as Program Director of Adult Day Programs. What I am most passionate about in my work is meeting people where they’re at, at an individual and deeply human level that extends compassion, respect, and dignity before anything else. In my free time I love dabbling in all forms of art, crafting, baking, watching / listening to musical theater and period films. I’m so excited to join you!

October Highlights!

October was packed with creativity, adventure, learning, and plenty of fun at Wild Hearts! Our learners have been busy preparing for the parade float, bringing stories and creativity to life in Drama and Story Quest, and putting their engineering skills to the test with egg drop challenges and even used their hypothetical budget to build structures designed to withstand an “earthquake!” We used our map skills to hide and hunt for buried treasure, explored the science of blood typing and compatibility, and traveled across the United States learning about fascinating people, places, and history along the way. We sharpened our critical thinking and strategy skills with games like Pokémon and, of course, chess! We also got creative making pet rocks, expressing ourselves through art and pottery, and tackling all kinds of hands-on projects in wood shop, and so much more. Of course, some of the best moments were the ones spent laughing, playing, working together, and making memories with friends. It was a busy month full of curiosity, imagination, and adventure, and we can't wait to see what November brings!
